Wise Mind*

Wise Mind (WM) is a wonderful DBT concept in which our Rider and Elephant work together in optimal relationship, connection, and effectivity.  WM is a state of cognitive/emotional awareness in which we are at our given potential best.  (Chew on that…)

Ego is what we feel about ourself in any given moment…and what goes into that feeling involves our hx, facts (truthful self-knowledge), delusion (esp in the form of SJ), and need.

– Wise mind (WM) is the melding of the ERM into a practical, effective, constructive force that can make life good.

– Wise mind is a cognitive [and thus intrapersonal] synergy.

Engaging wise mind:

  • Calmly
  • Quietly
  • Intentionally
  • Mindful defusion (Observing Self skill and practice)
  •

Traits/Characteristics/Elements of Wise Mind:

  • Rider in proactive mode (i.e., intentional thinking)
  • “Ex-Judgmentalism” (“without judgment” just isn’t possible but being tolerant, or at least biased towards, is)
  •

What does WM look like?  DBT founder Marsha Linehan describes wise mind as “that part of each person that can know and experience truth. It is where the person knows something to be true or valid. It is almost always quiet. It has a certain peace. It is where the person knows something in a centered way.”

SQ

meditation, mindfulness, reconditioning
Sitting Quietly (SQ) is first a self-care practice, one of calming renewal and connection…it’s also “the vehicle” of introspection, enabling discovery, insight…and healing.

Life Practices are particular activities we engage on a more or less regular basis, using skillsets we learn and develop, and that serve to make our lives meaningful, productive, and rewarding…

SQ is an evidenced-based way to actually retrain the Elephant and effect lasting change
